Introduction

Atoti UI is a web application allowing the analysis of very large datasets collaboratively, using shareable dashboards. With it, users can create performant and interactive tables and charts showing results of aggregations made on billions of data points. It is a component of our product: Atoti. This application contains many built-in functionalities and can also be extended through a system of plugins. This way, our customers can create their own specific visualisation components or actions, in order to answer specific business requirements.

But many functionalities imply many choices for end users. And choices are not always easy to make, especially for new users: how to best represent results? How to make them the most legible? How to show them in the most efficient manner, in order to convey their underlying message so that people consuming them understand them and use them to make decisions and take action?

This search for the best visualisation is a full fledged UX field. Information designers in particular study cognitive psychology in order to create visuals that will be accurately interpreted by most, allowing them to make data-driven decisions. There are many sources of information on the matter. Among others, we can mention for instance the book “Show me the numbers” by Stephen Few.

Expected work

The goal of this internship is to dive into this problem and to create a “recommended charts” functionality, directly in Atoti UI. This feature will be accessible contextually from an existing view and will present to the user a few other types of visualisations which would be relevant alternatives to this view.
